Learning How Your Well Tank Works
A well system consists of a pressure switch, pump and well pressure tank. The tank holds water at the bottom and compressed air at the top of the tank, and the air exerts pressure on the water. The well pump will fill your tank with water until the maximum pressure is reached, then the tank will shut off. When you open a tap, the compressed air presses the water out of the tank. When the water and air pressure in the tank drops lower than the pre-set level, the well pump will switch back on to fill the tank.

This creates a water chamber that is completely isolated from the steel walls of the tank and ensures that the water that goes in is the same as the water that comes out.
